SACM hockey is a bunch of CS geeks and friends who get together and play ice hockey. There are two groups that play, one intended for beginners and the other for more advanced players, but everyone is welcome to skate with either group. We also have an intramural team, the Slow Moving Vehicles. SACM hockey is sponsored by the UW Student ACM (SACM) chapter.
The group intended more for beginners meets about six times a semester. We use what is known as a soft puck for our games, basically it is a variation on a Nerf ball, so that we don't have to worry about people getting hit with pucks. More information and the current schedule is on the softpuck information page.
The more advanced group plays on a weekly basis, and uses a hard puck. The game is faster paced but beginners are welcome as long as they have the necessary equipment. The current schedule is on the hardpuck hockey information page.
Hardpuck is $8 an hour, or semester memberships are available. Details change each semester, but the membership fee is less than paying for each hour individually. Membership also confers some special treatment. See our hardpuck page for details.
We play at the Camp Randall Sports Center, commonly known as The Shell. It is located just a few blocks from Comp Sci, next to the football stadium.
For soft puck hockey all you really need to play is skates and a stick. The Shell rents skates for $2 and the club has some sticks available for your use. The rink also rents helmets for $2 which are required to play hard puck and are recommended for soft puck. The rink also rents goalie equipment for $5. Anything else you may want or need you will have to borrow or buy, but there are a few resale shops around town as well as garage sales.
For hardpuck hockey, you need:
Some players also have shoulder pads and padded hockey pants. You may be able to borrow some equipment, or you can buy new or used gear at hockey and used sports stores around town. If you have any questions about equipment, send mail to gretzky@cs.wisc.edu, and we will try and help you out.
If you don't know how to skate, you can do any of the following: You can simply show up for a soft puck game and we'll give you a quick lesson to get you going. If you are a bit less adventuresome you can wait for a clinic game where we will have more time to spend teaching you.
You can also go to an open skating session with someone who can teach you (a good time for this is Friday at noon and we sometimes make it an organized event). These are a great deal at the low price of $1.25 for students and $2.50 for the general public. Finally, you can take a skating class through the phy.ed. department -- they even have intermediate and advanced classes.
You can do one of two things: Just show up a few minutes before our scheduled ice time and put some skates on and head out onto the ice (you need to RSVP for hardpuck) or keep reading to find out how to join either of the club's mailing lists, so that you get all of the information about when the club is playing and when the clinics are scheduled.
If you have any questions, you can send mail to gretzky@cs.wisc.edu. Of course we must warn you, it's possible to get hooked on this sport, some of us had never played hockey until we came to grad school here, and now we skate many times a week!
Two SACM hockey mailing lists have been created (hockey-hardpuck and hockey-softpuck). These lists are managed by the mailman software. To get announcements about SACM Hockey events, subscribe to the appropriate list.
